Sporcle Saturday: New Beginnings

Which White Sox batters have been worth at least 1 bWAR in their first season?

Happy New Year to all, and to all: Welcome to a new year of Saturday Sporcle!

Seeing how today is the first Saturday of the year, I thought that the theme should be centered around new players. Your challenge for this week: name the White Sox batters who have logged at least 1 bWAR in their first season in the majors. In total, 35 names made the cut: about half are of recent vintage (1985-present); the other half will make you wish you paid more attention to Jim’s White Sox history posts. Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • As always, last names only are accepted, as well as first and last. For several of the players, nicknames and/or first names will also be accepted.
  • Since this list spans the entirety of White Sox history, I’m giving you a generous 15 minutes to attempt completion.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the season, the bWAR logged, and the primary position(s) of the player.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confound, and/or sadden your friends:

  • 11 of the players on this list finished in the top ten Rookie of the Year voting.
  • From those 11, three went on to win Rookie of the Year.
  • The youngest players on this list to make their debut were both 21, while the elder statesmen of the group led the way at the ripe old age of 30.

21 feel pretty good. 1973 was my only miss from 1950 and later- and while I obviously know the name and saw him play , I couldn’t come up with that. And I should’ve gotten 1915. Glad sporcle Saturday is still in my life. Also surprised to see there was no 1995 2B on here as I must’ve typed his name 11 times.

C’mon, you did not get Lyle Mouton.  You don’t even know what bWAR means. 🙂

I got him because I missed him last time. Lesson learned.

I got 18. As usual there were names I missed I should have remembered. Thanks for the quiz, brought back some memories.

26/35.  All the misses came before Bretton Woods, and I learned a bunch of names when the clock ran out. Nice first Machine Sporcle.

I got 20.  I also missed 1973 from recent vintage, and wish I had come up with 2 others that have appeared and been discussed on other Sporcle Saturdays.  Thanks as always tedsox.

While the merits of the spoiler tag could be debated on the old site, I think we do have to be careful now since the most recent posts appear on the right of the screen.

Well, I got 18, which was a struggle. Missed the 1998 INF and the 1995 OF from recent years. A couple of others I should have had, but not many. Good to see Sporcle up on the Machine.

18, so I’m batting over .500, right? That ought to be good for like 1.5 – 2 WAR, right?

Got 17. Disappointed I missed the 1998 INF — he’s often one of my favorite trivia questions.

15.  Got everybody post 1980 except for Caruso, Wilson, and Mouton, and I have zero recollection of the latter two.  I really need to get in the habit of just trying Bonura’s name for most every quiz, though.

Mouton was who we got for trading Black Jack. Wilson has been consigned to the dust bin of my mind as well.

Caruso is pretty much the definition of empty batting average
