Sporcle Saturday: Steals and dingers

Tim Anderson has been fun to watch thus far this season: stealing bases, hitting home runs, and generally looking like he’s having a heckuva time out there. Those home runs and stolen bases have put him on pace for 33 dingers and 47 bags swiped. Now, I don’t think that he’ll come close to those numbers (though I’d be happy for him to prove me wrong!), but it certainly seems possible that he could reach the 25 HR/35 SB mark. Here’s a list of players in White Sox history who have done that:

  • Nobody

If one backs it down a bit to 20/30, you do get two names:

  • Alex Rios (2010, 21/34)
  • Tommie Agee (1966, 22/44)

That’s all, folks. Suffice to say, Anderson would be in new territory if he can keep up this pace. In fact, in MLB as a whole, he’d be just the 59th instance to achieve the feat, which leads us to today’s Sporcle: which players in MLB history have hit at least 20 home runs in a season and stolen at least 35 bases? How many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • As always, last names accepted in addition to both first and last.
  • I’ve allotted 10 minutes for completion.
  • For hints, I’ve provided the season, the team., and the HRs/SBs.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confound, and/or confuse your friends:

  • Usually there’s just one or two names per season to have accomplished this: the outlier is 1987, which saw four.
  • There was a 34-year gap between the first time a player accomplished this feat, and the next time it occurred.
  • The most home runs in a season from these players? 46. The most stolen bases? 87.

Great quiz. 51/58. Only missed two in the ever important 1900s though.

Ted after looking again I think you are off. If the thing is 20/35 the. Agee fits. I think you’re looking for 25/35

KenWo4LiFe

Boomer also 51/58.

34/58. Amazing how I knew everybody before 1987 (when I graduated from college). Got about half of the guys from the 1990s but missed most of the late 1990s and drew big blanks between 2004 and 2011. There are only two that I should have remembered. You could have given me all day on the rest and would never have come out with them.

Brett R. Bobysud

45/58

Missed a lot of the guys from the mid to late 90s.

44. 3 guys that I forgot after 1995 would have accounted for 7 more. Great quiz!

Surprised not to see a certain former Mariner CF make the list. In 1999, he led the majors with 48 dongs and stole 24 bases, his career high for swipes in a season.

So close to glory! Probably still keeps him awake nights.

Great quiz, Ted.

54/58, and kicking myself that I forgot

Spoiler
Tommy Harper
could hit a few out.

Legit never heard of him. Going to have to yell at my dad again for not talking about him.

There’s a very funny story about him and Luis Tiant in Bill Lee’s memoir The Wrong Stuff. (A book I recommend to anyone reading this blog, even if it focuses on the wrong Sox.)

45/58. Only one I blanked on that I should have gotten was the 2007-08 Marlins player, and I kept thinking it was Carl Crawford for some reason. Was familiar with a few of the other names, but never would have guessed them.

Also, Kenny is a lot older than I thought.
