White Sox Minor Keys: June 12, 2018

After 48 career starts at Birmingham, Spencer Adams finally got the call to Charlotte.

The White Sox promoted Adams to Triple-A on Tuesday. The numbers on the whole aren’t impressive — a 4.59 ERA, 10 homers and just 53 strikeouts over 68⅔ innings. However, he finally seemed to flip the switch over his last three starts, allowing just one earned run over 21 innings.

Adams has been around since 2014, when the White Sox drafted him in the second round, yet he’s just 22 years old.

I can’t sleep until you post these.

Basabe also had a dinger (Was included in the highlight clip, just missing in the summary).

Man, that ball REALLY carried. He’s got some legit pop.

Looks like at least a couple of these guys came out of their slumps and punched their ticket to AA in the next week or so.

That sac fly is the first time I’ve seen Robert run with any perspective of distance. He can fly.

Also nice seeing another Rutherford homer.

Boy, that Winston-Salem outfield has come out of its slump with a vengeance these last few games.

Can someone break down the sombrero lingo for me? I know it has to do with striking out.

Flitcraft

Impetus (AFAIK) was that striking out three times was being called a “hat trick.” Well if three is a hat trick, what then to designate someone striking out four times? Enter the Golden Sombrero. Modern baseball being what it is, five strikeouts needed a name, so Platinum Sombrero. Dunno about six.

The hat trick three has since been back-named in the sombrero vein as a Silver Sombrero, but I’m fairly positive it was the hat that first spawned the sombrero.

Thank you

Thank you for the in depth response and double thanks for not making fun of me for not knowing. I guess I actually did know what they were, but I was hung up on the hat trick/Silver sombrero distinction (which you addressed, cheers) and was second guessing what I thought I knew.

I believe Vibranium has been nominated for six strikeouts in a game.

I’ve always been a fan of using the rare earth elements, or some of the more goofily named elements. Neodymium, Ytterbium, Seaborgium, etc.

patrickcroberts

If Yeyson Yrizarri ever strikes out 6 times in a game it’ll have to be the Ytterbium Sombrero.

zerobs

I don’t like rare earth being used for 6 strikeouts. You could take anybody in the stands and they’d strike out 6 times. Go with something common. Antimony Sombrero.

The traditional gift for a 6th wedding anniversary is iron, so how about the Iron Sombrero?

MrTopaz

God, that would be such a great wrestling name.

I had this same question about a week ago, which led me to a Wikipedia page dedicated to baseball lingo. I learned that a 6-strikeout game can be referred to as a “horn”–after Baltimore Oriole Sam Horn (I barely remember his baseball card), who struck out 6 times in a 1991 extra inning game. It’s also called a double-platinum sombrero or a titanium sombrero. But it happens so rarely (every ten years or so) that Sam Horn likely will be forgotten the next time, if he isn’t already. Hopefully it won’t be renamed a “Moncada” or a “Davidson.” (Moncada is second in strikeouts this year behind Joey Gallo. On pace for well over 200.)

Sophist

Six is going to be the Cubano, after the second baseman who will pull it off twice in a single season.

Jose Rodriguez now with the 2.3% strikeout rate (43 PAs).
