Sporcle Saturday: Sox bombers of the ’80s

(Bryce Edwards / Flickr)

On Sunday, Harold Baines will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. While his election was surprising, even for many Sox fans, Baines does hold a special place in franchise history. During the decade, Baines led the Sox in home runs, RBI, walks, doubles, triples, runs…just about every offensive category out there. He also logged the sixth-most hits in the majors over this time period, which isn’t too shabby.

Today’s Sporcle will celebrate Baines’ induction, as we’ll be examining the other Sox hitters who drove in runs via the long ball. “Sox bombers” is a bit of a misnomer, though: to qualify for this list, a player needed only to log at least 10 dingers over the course of the decade, and that will still give us just 25 names. How many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted ten minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints I’ve provided the number of home runs, and the player’s position.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • This marks the fourth year in a row (and five of six) a player will be inducted into the Hall of Fame with White Sox ties (though just two will be wearing the White Sox cap).
  • Every position on the diamond is represented on this list (with the exception of pitcher, of course).
  • During this decade, Baines placed among the top-25 power hitters in baseball (23rd) with 189 long balls. (Mike Schmidt is first, with 313)

23/25. Should’ve gotten them all. Disappointed. The two I missed were before 83 but no excuse!

17/25. I maybe should have had one or two more (those with totals of 38 and 28). That is one pretty pathetic list

22/25. Shouldn’t have missed the guy with 38, since he still wears a Sox uniform.

21/25. The one that killed me was
