Podcast: Baseball's Cheating Crisis

Guest: Connor McKnight, 670 the Score

Major League Baseball delivered punishment to the Houston Astros for using technology to inform hitters of what pitches were coming. The fallout has been widespread with multiple firings from teams. When including the juiced baseball, and negotiations with both MiLB and MLBPA, is there a trust issue with Major League Baseball? To help answer is guest Connor McKnight from 670 the Score.

Plus, we answer your questions in P.O. Sox:

Alex Rude:

If you’re Rick Hahn when next winter rolls around which of the following would you prioritize: signing a George Springer or Mookie Betts type free agent or extending Moncada? (Assuming no major regression from Moncada of course)

Andrew Segall:

On paper, how likely is it for this team to either overcome the twins to win the central or win a wildcard birth? What can increase the likelihood of either?

Trooper Galactus:

The White Sox look like a fringe contender and should be doing every small thing possible to max out their chances for the playoffs. Aside from starting Madrigal on Opening Day and maybe bunting a lot less, what are some other things they can do between the margins to squeeze out some extra wins from their roster?

Bonus P.O. Sox Questions for Patreon Supporters:

Has anyone from the Chicago media asked the Sox front office about Daryl Boston this week?

Doug Weerts

Which second basemen are still available and might take a 1-year contract or minor league contract?

Brennen Douglass

What should fans expect from the unproven pitching staff this season in order to mold the White Sox into contenders? ERA’s, # of strikeouts, whip, etc?

Thank you for the thoughtful discussion of my question. One reason why I asked about the media is I am reminded of when the coach abuse scandal in the NHL last fall brought up Blackhawks assistant coach Marc Crawford’s actions in his past jobs more than a decade ago. Those reports included local and national media. The response was a suspension while the team investigated, and ultimately the team reinstated him three weeks ago.

Details in the two cases are considerably different both in the past violence alleged and the present ability of living victims to testify, but the parallel of a coach for a team being scrutinized for long-ago actions alleged while employed elsewhere did cross my mind.
