White Sox announce 2021 alternate site location, roster, schedule

With the White Sox entering the first full week of the regular season and the second spring training about to commence, the team announced its plans for the alternate training site, which is once again located at Wintrust Field/Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg.

This year’s alternate site roster has more of a veteran tilt, as the prized younger prospects that populated the camp last year are reporting instead to Arizona for training in preparation for a more conventional minor league season starting in May.

The roster is heavy on right-handed pitchers, but they do have enough players to field a proper nine. That actually matters this year, because the Schaumburg Sox will play nine games against outside competition. They’ll host the alternate Cubs team for four dates in Schaumburg and once at Guaranteed Rate Field. Likewise, the Cubs will host the alternate Sox team at their camp in South Bend for four dates, one of which will be open to the public (April 17). The White Sox said they’re considering allowing fans for game(s) in Schaumburg.

Here’s who the White Sox are carrying:

  • RHP (12): Zack Burdi, Ryan Burr, Will Carter, Danny Dopico, Tayron Guerrero, Tyler Johnson, Reynaldo López, Kade McClure, Alex McRae, Connor Sadzeck, Jonathan Stiever and Mike Wright.
  • LHP (2): Kodi Medeiros and Nik Turley.
  • C (2): Carlos Pérez and Seby Zavala.
  • INF (6): Tim Beckham, Marco Hernández, Danny Mendick, Zach Remillard, Matt Reynolds and Gavin Sheets.
  • OF (4): Luis González, Mikie Mahtook, Blake Rutherford and Nick Williams.

Five of those players — González, Mendick, Reynolds, Burdi and McRae — won’t be in Schaumburg immediately, as they’re in Seattle with the White Sox comprising the taxi squad.

In an unrelated note I’ll attempt to tie in by saying he was a member of both the Schaumburg alternate site and White Sox taxi squad, Yermín Meredes earned American League Player of the Week honors.

Congratulations to Yermin! I hope it’s the first of many awards that come his way.

I’m assuming that if Anderson misses any time with his sore hamstring Mercedes will be filling in at SS. Who cares if he’s never played there before? The guy can hit!
